The German Colonial Empire
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (December, 1978)
Author: Woodruff D. Smith
Average review score:

Best English Treatment of the German Overseas Empire
The German Colonial Empire was a short lived phenomenon but one that played an important role in the domestic poltics of the German Reich prior to WWI. Smith shows the interplay of domestic politics and colonial policy. The development of two modes of thought about the colonies in Germany- settlement colonialism and economic colonialsim are presented as compteting ideas. He is also excellent at showing the evolutionary nature of the German colonial adminstration and how it responded to major challenges (like the Maji Maji revolt). On the whole Smith emphasizes that the German Empire was a work in progress and one that was not (Allied propoganda efforts aside) dramatically different than those of the French and English. In particular, it was, in some was reforming itself at a faster rate than older colonial powers like the English from whihc the German initially borrowed many of their adminsitarive techniques. None of this should imply that Smith glosses over the very real abuses of the German colonial adminsitration (particularly in its earliest phases when colonial compnaies control the colonies). The book is a fascinating read and well written. It is a must for any student of the German Empire before WWI.

The book also informs on Smith's later work The Ideological Origins of Nazi Imperialism.

It Must Be Magic (Sweet Dreams)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (December, 1983)
Author: Marian Woodruff
Average review score:

A really good read with an unusual "Genie" theme!
I really enjoyed this book when I read it for the first time about 15 years ago. It is the classic tale of studious, shy girl (Kerri Stuart) falling in love with popular, out-going athlete (Mike Price) who already has a gorgeous girlfriend.

The background of "Student Genie Week" brings Kerri and Mike together as he becomes her personal genie and makes her wishes his commands!

The book contains some hilarious moments as well as romantic ones as Kerri and Mike compete for "Genie Couple of the Week". Kerri relies on more than a little help from her friends as "The Arabian Nights Ball" - the traditional dance to round off Genie Week - draws ever closer and it looks as though Kerri won't have a date.

The ending has a great twist which will keep readers guessing up to the very last page!

Managing Youth Ministry Chaos
Published in Paperback by Group Publishing Inc (January, 2000)
Author: Mike Woodruff
Average review score:

Timely, Practical Wisdom
MYMC was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Its format makes it easy to pick up and put down with ease, and the contents are extremely practical, often addressing the mundane issues of ministry life that other authors might consider too unspiritual to write on. While consistently Biblically based, Woodruff never takes himself too seriously (I laughed out loud on several occasions). The management advice was aimed at youth pastors like me by someone who obviously has "been there," yet was broad enough that non-youth pastors would benefit by its wisdom. I would highly recommend this book!

The Memory Coat
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic Paperbacks (March, 1999)
Authors: Elvira Woodruff and Michael Dooling
Average review score:

A lovely, sentimental story
I purchased a copy of this book for a friend whose great grandparents immigrated from Russia and entered the United States through Ellis Island and then purchased one for myself to read aloud to my third grade students. The paintings are beautiful and haunting; some in color, some in sepia tones. The story itself is heartwarming and sentimental.

News for a Change : An Advocate's Guide to Working with the Media
Published in Paperback by Corwin Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence Wallack, Lori Dorfman, Katie Woodruff, and Iris Diaz
Average review score:

Excellent guide for advocates
Larry Wallack, Katie Woodruff and Lori Dorfman are recognized experts in media advocacy. This book was a textbook for my media communications course in a graduate school of public health. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a better understanding of how to work with the media to support advocacy and policy issues, in any subject area. It incorporates a workbook style, with examples of press releases, letters, etc. It's a how-to for hands-on folks. There are also other books focusing on media advocacy, written by Wallack and Dorfman, that I would highly recommend. But News for a Change is an excellent starting point for anyone who needs the media to cover an advocacy/policy issue.

Oedipus Tyrannus
Published in Hardcover by Hackett Pub Co (March, 2000)
Authors: Peter Meineck, Paul Woodruff, and E. A. Sophocles
Average review score:

Oedipus Tyrannus - Power and Clarity for a Modern Audience
I first stumbled across this edition whilst searching the web for an acting edition of Oedipus to use with my Year Eleven Drama class. Once I received this edition I was so pleased that I had taken the gamble to purchase it.

For anyone searching for an 'acting' rather than 'literary' edition of Oedipus, I would strongly suggest that you have a close look at this publication. Peter Meineck and Paul Woodruff's collaboration makes the tragedy of Oedipus very accessible for a modern audience. This publication contains an Introduction with explanations of the history of Greek theatre, the nature of tragedy, the function of the chorus, and an analysis of the plot and characterisation. This edition also comes with foot-of-the-page notes and stage directions which are valuable when studying Oedipus as Drama.

What I particularly liked about this publication was its readability, without being simplistic. This translation was characterised by clarity, accuracy, and power of language, retaining the emotion of the original text. I have been so impressed with this translation that I am seriously considering purchasing a class set to use with my students.

It was a pleasure to see a copy of Oedipus especially developed for the stage rather than the page.
